Watermelons (Citrullus lanatus) love to sprawl, but even a small garden should have space for at least one plant. Growing 3/4 to 1 1/5 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet long, these annual vines produce the sweetest watermelons in hot conditions and with reduced water in the late growth stage. Early varieties, such as 'New Hampshire Midget,' are suitable for growing in a small yard because they take up less space than standard types.

Find the Sun
Watermelons grow best in the warmest, most sheltered spot in a small garden. Thriving in full-sun and well-drained soil, these deep-rooted plants don't grow well in containers and suffer stress when transplanted. Grow watermelons in mounds 8 to 12 inches high, 2 feet wide and 4 feet long, in sandy soil or silt. Amend clay soils by digging in 3 inches of garden compost, leaf mold, well-rotted compost or other organic matter to improve drainage. A 5-10-10 fertilizer spread at a rate of 5 ounces per 10 square feet, or according to the manufacturer's instructions, feeds plants for the first weeks. Sow three seeds directly into the soil in spring after all danger of frost has passed, and remove the two weaker seedlings when the second set of leaves appear.
Turn up the Heat
Warm soil promotes fast growth and sweet watermelons. Spread black plastic over the ground around watermelons to warm the soil and suppress weeds, avoiding watermelon stems. Punch holes through the plastic to allow water to penetrate and bury the edges under the soil to secure it. Another effective mulch is straw, which increases soil warmth, reduces weeds and helps prevent watermelons from rotting by providing a dry support. Straw also feeds the soil when it breaks down. Spread a 6- to 8-inch layer and top up as needed.

Water and fertilizer requirements for watermelons change over the growing season. Apply water deeply and frequently for the first three to four weeks after seedlings sprout, and continue to irrigate so that the soil is constantly moist but not sodden, until watermelons are baseball size. Weekly applications are sufficient from then on, or when plants wilt in the afternoon and don't recover the following morning. Spread a 5-10-10 fertilizer 1 foot from plant stems at a rate of 5 ounces per 10 square feet, or according to the manufacturer's instructions, when vines are 1 foot long and again when watermelons appear.
Pursue Pests
In a small garden with few watermelons, inspecting plants for pests takes little time. Young watermelons suffer attacks from earwigs, cucumber beetles and flea beetles, which eat watermelon foliage, and aphids, whiteflies and powdery mildew infest older plants. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and gloves when applying pesticides. Control young watermelon pests with an insecticide dust, applying a fine film of a 5-percent carbaryl product over watermelon foliage in the evening, or according to the manufacturer's instructions, and repeat applications weekly as needed. To control aphids and whiteflies, spray an insecticidal soap, such as a 1-percent potassium salts of fatty acids product, avoiding midday heat and weekly as needed, or according to the manufacturer's instructions.
